The old monk.
Sunset on the way back from Chelekot.

The Amba Aradam massif seen from Chelekot.

Windows and doors are build with wild olive trees.

The deacon shows us how to play drums (Keberos).

Si chiude, si e' fatto tardi. On ferme l'église: c'est tard.
It's late: the church is closing.
L' orologio cinese stona un po'. Le horloge chinoise denote.
The chinese clock denote.

In the middle the most alert girl.
The main entrance of the Church court. Wonderful is the door made with wild olive trees. Unfortunately they are being replaced with iron sheet doors.
The monk asks for charity, perhaps to replace the concrete steel made cross with a more adapted one.

**************
The Church of Chelekot was built by prince (ras) Welda-Sellassie at the end of the 18th century. Welda-Sellassie was born at Abba-Tsehma, south of Adwa. Towards 1790 he seized control of Tigray and set up his capital at Hentalo. According to local tradition, ras Welsa-Sellassie, once established at Hentalo, was accustomed to go and celebrate the Feast of the Trinity in the month of Genfal, in the Tembien region. One day, as he was returning from the ceremony, one of his favourites was carried off by the waves of the River Gaba in spate. Those nearest to him said: "Why should we suffer thus during the monsoon? Let us built a church!" He chose the valley of Chelekot, which was well irrigated and fertile, less than two hours north of Hentalo, as the site for this new church. The building of the church dedicated to the Trinity began on the 7th maskaram 1785, Ethiopian calendar, and was finished on the 7th hamle 1785, that is, the 17th July 1793. The ras gave the church the name of Debra-Tedla, which was later changed to Debra-Mehrat. The church consists of a circular building with a central square sanctuary. The facade of the church is decorated with attractive carved olive tree's wood.
