Mourdiah, Sahel, Mautitanian borders. So much people around the only one well on the area.

After 2006, rich in trips to the African Continent, the next year will be great too. In the beginning of 2007 I’ll go to Ruanda, to Kigali to stay for at least three days. From there I’ll have to fly to Ethiopia to Addis Abeba, a wonderful country and everything in it still to be discovered (but that will be another blog).
After a few days in the Ethiopian capital to say hello to friends and to visit “Lucy”, a direct flight with Ethiopian Airlines will take me to Mali to Bamako, my final destination.
Mali is one of the poorest African countries in the world and the country that receives more international aid. It is an extraordinary anthropological mélange and has an extraordinary vitality. Within it exists thousands of societies and thousands of cultural universes. To understand these takes a lifetime of studies and research. Even if it relies on international aid, it has the potential of taking off on its own. After all, it lives the common destiny of Africa, that is no longer the Continent of exoticisms and adventures, but an area in the world that keeps an eye on the more progressive Western World. It does not confine with the Ocean. Its people, mainly of Bambara origin, are kind and gentle. The women dress in colorful garments and have a very proud bearing. They love music and dance. I’ll have a lot of work to do here. Buying a jeep … Also, we have to put up three logistical bases, one in Bamako that will be used as a guest house and office, another one in Segou and Kayes, bordering Senegal. Kayes is one of the hottest cities in the world, perhaps as hot as Djibuti.
The project foresees the drilling of 80 wells for drinking water and the rehabilitation of other 120 wells which will be equipped with pumps that will run on solar energy. In the more important towns, fountains will be installed along the main streets. And there is a program also to construct 2000 latrines. A few years ago, I participated in a similar project in the first and second region of Mali and it was a big success for the locals: in just a few days the well was drilled, placed with tubes, flushed and after the trials was equipped with a hand pump. In no time the well was utilized; clean water filled the buckets that had been filled at one time with water that spread diseases. The women no longer will have to take those long journeys to collect contaminated water.
